Why home batteries make sense in Nevada

November 14, 2019 | 3min read

Home batteries make sense in Nevada for three main reasons. First, as of the date of this blog, there is an incentive program that can pay 50% of the cost of the batteries up to a maximum of $3,000. Secondly, Nevada has high evening electric rates. Home batteries can power a home during those expensive peak rate hours. Third, blackouts happen, and home batteries can provide power to a home during a blackout.

Nevada Residential Storage program

The Nevada Residential Storage program is open to Nevadans who install combined solar and battery systems from 4 kilowatts up to 100 kilowatts in capacity. There are two incentive levels in the program that are based on how the customer is billed:

  • Time-of-use (TOU) rate: $0.22 per watt/hour up to 50% of the system cost not to exceed $3,000
  • Flat rate: $0.11 per watt/hour up to 50% of the system cost not to exceed $3,000

An example of how the Nevada Residential Storage program works

Freedom Forever carries and installs the LG Chemcell 9.8 kilowatt-hour battery.

  • TOU rate = 9,800 watt/hours * $0.22 = $2,156 maximum credit
  • Flat rate = 9,800 watt/hours * $0.11 = $1,078 maximum credit

Home batteries work great with Time-of-Use rates because the batteries power your home during peak rate hours. The batteries then recharge during the day when the sun is shining. Thus your home is powered during the day from solar, and in the evenings with batteries. This reduces your dependence on expensive electricity from the utility company.

Home batteries are eligible for the federal tax credit for renewable energy

If you collected the federal renewable energy tax credit when you went solar, you may be eligible to collect it again if you add batteries to your solar system. Currently, the tax credit will cover 26% of the installed cost of the batteries. But you have to act soon. The federal renewable energy tax credit will be reduced to 22% in 2021. After that, it will be phased out entirely.
