Solar-powered cars are here

March 10, 2021 | 3min read

The first mass-produced solar-powered car by Aptera Motors is scheduled to roll out in 2021, and it could cost as little as $25,900. As of February 2021, Aptera Motors moved production design to Sorrento Valley, San Diego. Distribution will begin after the car passes the appropriate safety tests. Pre Orders filled up in December 2020 and the car is causing a lot of buzz, here’s why (www.aptera.us).

It looks sleek and futuristic

The car has only three wheels and features an aerodynamic shape, similar to an aircraft. Its design is meant to reduce the drag from the air that moves between the ground and the car. The three wheels are no accident. They help eliminate a touch point where the car may lose energy. The frame is made of fiberglass and carbon composites to create a light vehicle. Lighter frames mean less energy is needed to move the car. Some of the frame is actually 3D printed, keeping costs low.

It can go far and fast

The Aptera car is covered with 34sq ft of solar cells, enough to take the car 40 miles on a clear day. The car is designed to take you on your daily commute without needing to charge. If you do need to charge, it works the same as any EV, but better. With only 15 minutes of charge time, you can go 150 miles. The Aptera is also pretty fast. It can go from 0 to 60mph in 3.5 seconds and hit up to 110mph.

The battery pack has you covered

Although the Aptera won’t require charging on a clear day, it is equipped with a battery that gives you up to 1,000 miles. For reference, the Tesla Model S currently provides 370 miles. The Aptera prides itself on efficiency. The interior is designed to eliminate heat when parked and activating sleep modes on electronics to preserve energy. The car runs off 100 watt hours per mile, that’s the equivalent of running a computer for 30 minutes.

The Aptera is good for the environment

Traditional cars run on gasoline and release greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. EVs are highly efficient and help reduce pollution. The Aptera is reportedly four times more efficient than an EV and 13 times more efficient than a truck that runs on gasoline. The car is particularly attractive to individuals who care about the environment.

Pair EV and solar vehicles with a home solar system

It appears that solar-powered cars are now more feasible than ever. If you decide to purchase the innovative Aptera or an EV, there are many advantages to pairing it with a home solar system. Running on sunshine is good for the environment and can save you money each month. If you decide to go solar with your car and home, our authorized dealers can discuss current incentives with you.
