How to add solar panels to an existing system

May 19, 2020 | 3min read

Adding solar panels to an existing solar system is easy. However, you may need to get a new permit, and/or you may need to have your system reinspected. After that, there are two main factors that you need to consider. First, do you have enough room to add panels to your system? Second, is your system’s inverter rated high enough to handle the additional power?

Best option: Have your solar installer add panels to your existing system

The company that installed your solar panels is generally your best choice for adding panels to your existing system. That company services the warranty that your system is covered by, and your contract with them may require you to use them to maintain your warranty. Freedom Forever solar systems are covered by our 25-year performance guarantee. To ensure that all of your newly expanded Freedom Forever system is covered by our warranty, you will want to have us add panels to your existing Freedom Forever system.

Do you have room to add panels to your existing system?

There are two things to consider when evaluating if you have room to add solar panels to your existing system. First, how much additional power do you need? Second, does the space you have available get good sunlight? One easy way to estimate the answer to those questions is to use Google’s Project Sunroof. This tool will enable you to get an estimate of the total amount of power your roof could deliver. Just enter your address and Project Sunroof will show you a visual estimation of how much power your system could produce if you maxed it out. If the amount of power shown by Project Sunroof is within the additional amount of power you need, then it’s likely you have enough room on your roof to get the additional power you need.

Is your inverter rated high enough to handle the additional power?

In many cases, we find that our customers’ existing inverter can handle their additional power needs. If you’ve called your installer about adding solar panels to your existing system, then they will be able to check into your inverter’s rated capacity and advise you on it.

The maximum amount of solar power you can add to an existing solar system may be regulated by your utility company.

Some utility companies restrict the maximum amount of solar power that they will allow you to produce. Your solar installer will know if there is any restriction in place and they’ll be able to advise you on it. These power restrictions are usually based on your energy usage. If you’ve been using more power since you went solar, then the maximum amount of power you are allowed to generate will have increased since you installed your system.
