Understanding your utility bill after solar
Still getting a utility bill after going solar? That is completely normal. Here is why.
You are still connected to the grid
Unless you have a battery, your home draws power from the grid at night or on cloudy days. A battery stores your solar energy so you can use it anytime.
What is net metering?
When your panels produce more than your home uses, the extra goes back to the grid and you earn credits. Those credits offset what you pull from the grid later.
What is true-up billing?
Some utilities settle your account annually — tracking production vs. usage over 12 months and sending one statement. If you produced more than you used, you may get a credit. If not, you pay the difference.
Why might my bill be higher than expected?
- Higher electricity usage (new EV, appliances, more people at home)
- Winter — shorter days mean less production
- Utility rate increases
A small bill is normal. If your bill seems much higher or your system isn’t producing at all, email us at customersupport@freedomforever.com.
My system doesn’t seem to be working
Before you call us, try these steps. Most issues have a quick fix.
- Check your monitoring app
Open Enphase Enlighten, mySolarEdge, or the Tesla app. Look for alerts or errors. - Check your inverter
Green light = normal. Red or amber = possible error. No lights = may have lost power. - Check your circuit breakers
Make sure the solar disconnect breaker is in the ON position. - Check for shading or debris
A new branch or debris on panels can reduce output. - Check time of day and weather
No production at night or during heavy overcast is completely normal.
Still not working? Email customersupport@freedomforever.com and we will schedule a service visit if needed.
Activating & setting up your system
Your system cannot turn on until your utility issues Permission to Operate (PTO). Once we receive it, we will notify you — no action needed on your end.
Set up your monitoring app
- Enphase Enlighten — Connect using the Envoy serial number from your install docs. App Store · Google Play
- SolarEdge (mySolarEdge) — Register using the site ID from your install docs. App Store · Google Play
- Tesla — Follow the setup flow in the Tesla app to connect your Gateway. App Store · Google Play
Production varies by season and weather. Your monitoring data may take a couple of days to fully sync after activation.
Monitoring app & WiFi setup
When your app shows offline, it is usually just a WiFi issue. Your system may still be producing — it just cannot send data until the connection is restored.
Enphase Envoy
Open the Enlighten app → system settings → select your Envoy → Network Configuration → enter your updated WiFi credentials.
SolarEdge
Access WiFi setup mode on your inverter, connect to its temporary hotspot from your phone, then enter your home network credentials.
Tesla Gateway
Open the Tesla app → home energy settings → Gateway → update WiFi network → follow the prompts.
