What’s a main panel upgrade? Will I need one?

February 17, 2020 | 2min read

A Main Panel Upgrade (MPU) is a service where your existing electrical breaker box is upgraded to a new one with new electrical circuit breakers. An MPU may be needed if the breakers in your electrical breaker box aren’t able to handle the additional electrical load provided by a solar power system. Another reason you may need an MPU is if your home’s electrical breakers are outdated. There are some older breaker boxes that are actually dangerous and they should be replaced to reduce the risk of an electrical fire in your home.

How can I find out if I need a main panel upgrade?

When you go solar, one of the first things that will happen is that a technician will come to your home to inspect it for readiness to go solar. They will determine if your house’s main panel needs an upgrade. Some old breaker panels have been determined to be dangerous. For more information on what panels have been found to be dangerous, check out this website.

Note: The website linked above states that Zinsco panels can be dangerous. Freedom Forever can install solar with Zinsco panels unless other issues are found

A main panel upgrade can benefit you in the future

If you choose to consume more power in the future, a main panel upgrade may be necessary. That can happen if you buy an electric vehicle, add on to your home, or get a pool or spa. If you have an older home, its panel may not be adequate to fulfill your future energy needs.
