Benefits of EV and solar ownership in Utah

March 5, 2020 | 3min read

Owning an electric vehicle (EV) and a solar system is a smart move in Utah. Rocky Mountain Power offers a special Time-of-Use (ToU) rate for EV owners that can help you save on utility bills. Qualifying customers can also receive an incentive of up to $200 for installing a stage 2 (220 Volt) charger in their home. The great thing about EVs is that they are very cheap to operate. Between your rooftop solar and your EV, the savings can really add up!

Two Time-of-Use rate plans for EVs offered by Rocky Mountain Power

You must own an EV or a plug-in hybrid to be eligible for these ToU rates. If you sign up for either of these plans and remain enrolled for one year, you’ll be eligible to earn a $200 incentive from Rocky Mountain Power. That’s in addition to the up to $200 incentive you can earn by installing stage 2 charger.

With a ToU plan, when you use electricity determines how much per kilowatt-hour you’ll pay for that electricity. To save money on a ToU plan, you’ll want to shift as much of your electrical usage as possible to off-peak hours. Another thing to remember about these plans is that the amount you pay per kilowatt-hour for electricity will also vary by season. As of the time of writing, we are in the season of Spring so users will want to charge their car after 8 PM on weekdays under either rate plan.

Rate Option #1

This plan has a higher off-peak rate but a much lower on-peak rate than Rate Option #2. Thus, this plan is better for people who can’t move much of their on-peak electrical usage to off-peak hours.

Summer

Off-peak – 8 PM to 3 PM – 7 cents per kilowatt-hour

On-peak – 3 PM to 8 PM – 22 cents per kilowatt-hour

Weekends and holidays – 7 cents per kilowatt-hour at all times

Winter

Off-peak – 8 PM to 8 AM – 7 cents per kilowatt-hour

On-peak – 3 PM to 8 PM – 22 cents per kilowatt-hour

                   8 AM to 10 AM – 22 cents per kilowatt-hour

Weekends and holidays – 7 cents per kilowatt-hour at all times

Rate Option #2

This option has a much higher peak rate than option #1. But it has lower off-peak rates. Thus, if you can move much of your electrical usage to off-peak hours, then you may be able to save under this plan.

Summer

Off-peak – 8 PM to 3 PM – 3 cents per kilowatt-hour

On-peak – 3 PM to 8 PM – 34 cents per kilowatt-hour

Weekends and holidays – 3 cents per kilowatt-hour at all times

Winter

Off-peak – 8 PM to 8 AM – 3 cents per kilowatt-hour

On-peak – 3 PM to 8 PM – 34 cents per kilowatt-hour

                   8 AM to 10 AM – 34 cents per kilowatt-hour

Weekends and holidays – 3 cents per kilowatt-hour at all times
