Benefits of EV and solar ownership in Nevada

February 24, 2020 | 3min read

EV and solar ownership can save you money in any state. Nevada doesn’t offer any state-level or utility-level incentives for buying an electric vehicle (EV). However, Nevada Energy does offer a special EV Time-of-Use (TOU) rate that can cut your monthly cost for electricity. There is still a federal tax credit for buying EVs, but if you want to take advantage of it you have to hurry. The credit has begun phasing out and will be phased out entirely by the end of 2021.

You should contact a qualified tax expert and consult with them. Neither Freedom Forever’s family of independent authorized dealers nor Freedom Forever itself can give you tax advice. A qualified tax professional will understand your situation and be able to give you the most relevant advice.

Why EV and solar ownership is a great idea

Going solar is a smart way to gain certainty about the cost of your electricity. Instead of worrying about how much more your utility company may increase its rates this year, you get the peace-of-mind that comes with locking in your cost for electricity. Now apply that same logic to the price of gas. One bad weather event can shut down a major refinery and send the price of gas skyrocketing.

Driving an EV protects you from gas price increases and spikes. Plus, an EV is eligible in Nevada for a special low Time-of-Use electricity rate. That rate cuts the cost of recharging your car and may also lower the rate you pay for electricity even when you’re not charging your car. The EV TOU rates are lower than the non-EV TOU rates, so you save on your utility bill.

EV Time of Use rates in Nevada

Nevada Energy offers a special EV (TOU) rate for Southern and Northern Nevada customers who own an EV or plug-in hybrid and are willing to charge their cars between the hours of 10:01 PM and 8 AM. Better yet, that special rate applies to all electricity that you use during those hours. If you are willing to shift some of your electricity usage, such as doing laundry, to those hours, you can save electricity costs on those uses too.

Solar and EV together can increase your savings

By combining home solar with an EV, you can save on both gas and electricity and avoid uncertainty over utility rate hikes and gas price increases in the future. Another great reason to go electric is Nevada’s Electric Highway program. The state is engaged in an effort to electrify Nevada’s highways. While traveling on US 95 from Reno to Las Vegas, you can find fast-charging stations that get you charged up and back on the road in a hurry.
